Limited Edition Tamales
Para Todo El Mundo
with City Tamale
Premieres on National Tamale Day 2024
To commemorate the milestone 10-year anniversary of City Tamale, LLC., a series of Limited Edition Tamales will be unveiled throughout 2024, further cementing tamales as a staple global food. Based on the theme, “Tamales for Everyone! | Tamales Para Todo El Mundo”, this arts and cultural project will bring together guest cocineros, local artists, and poignant storytelling to highlight the personal and cultural impact tamales have throughout the world.
Launching on Saturday, March 23, 2024 (11AM-3PM) on National Tamale Day, City Tamale will begin releasing a series of Limited Edition Tamale (LET) drops for exclusive sale at their main shop in Hunts Point, in the South Bronx. There will be three LET releases taking place this year - March 23, July 13 and November 1. The first LET drop will feature the flavorful creations of Cocinera tradicional Mary of Mary’s Tamales, who is presenting her native Guatemalan recipe, a savory treat filled with chicken and pork marinated with her special “recado” flavor.
Accompanying Mary’s culinary treat will be the visual artwork of Mexican artist, Marco A. Barrioz, whose piece "El Señor Del Los Tamales" is inspired by the indigenous origins of tamales and imagery that celebrates the efforts of City Tamale as they continue to keep this traditional food alive. His original artwork will be on display at City Tamale and as part of each LET purchase.
Bringing together an intergenerational, diasporic, multigenre gathering of novelists, poets, visual artists, playwrights, activists, academics, and more, Mosaic: Black/queer/lit stages conversations and poses questions within and between its lines: What is “queerness” to us, and how does it shape our visions of Blackness, gender, transness, class, nation, and power? How do we imagine queer spaces of belonging, both as living community, and within broader Black, feminist, anti-colonial, and other radical political legacies? What queer lessons does the natural world teach? What are the nourishing shapes of Black queer spirituality? What power does sex and desire bring to Black queer literary life? What language can we create to name our genders and lay claim to our bodies’ freedom amid systems committed to our undoing? What does “queerness” want to say to Black “gay and lesbian” history? What does it need to hear?
